The 2022 vintage–another big challenge

Our team–hard at work around the world, in the vineyards and in the cellar.

Once again we’ve learned

a lesson from our vines!

In the cellar, both fermentation and decanting finished several days ago and we can finally say that the harvest for this year is over! It was an intense period, without nary a pause between harvesting one variety and another. This does also happen in 'normal' years, but this year we began the harvest at the end of August and didn’t finish until exactly one month and two days later. As always, Nebbiolo was the last variety to be picked–but–during the last week of September! Usually, Nebbiolo is harvested towards the end of October. To be honest, we were a bit taken aback by this, however, the grapes were ripe and ready for the cellar. And we were lucky. Temperatures fell and we picked the Nebbiolo enveloped by the first of the foggy early autumn mornings–real “Nebbiolo weather”. This has been a very difficult year for growers, with such a completely unexpected situation making it a huge challenge. We were however able to give our vines a hand dealing with the heat and the drought and are totally satisfied with the quality of our grapes this year, as you can see in the accompanying video. The autochthonous Langa varieties–especially Nebbiolo–have always been resilient and this year they navigated the difficult weather conditions with aplomb. As often is the case, the vines taught us an important life lesson! It's a bit too soon to call this an exceptional year, but the opulence and complexity of these smaller than average berries, a lesser yield along with the acidity prompted by sharp temperature changes over the last few weeks are very encouraging.
